Why do Medicines have crazy names?

Venidol

Each Business has its own identity and its products are identifying by their brand name. A brand is a name, a symbol, or a logo that allows differentiating one product from the other. In the pharma industry, Brand names held the most important place in terms of health safety.

The brand name is the attribute of a product after its quality and packing from the end user’s point of view. The world recognizes brand names for its quality, efficiency, and reliability. Pharma brands such as Vicks, Iodex, Lipitor, Crocin, Corex, and Gleevac are kept in the first aid box in almost all homes.

Why Pharma drugs are rejected?

The No 1 reason is of rejection of drugs is that the Food and Drug Administration does not want the brand names to be too similar when prescriptions are filled. The concern is that the prescribed drug can be confused with another, which could cause serious medical problems. It involves not just the spelling of the name, but also its pronunciation and appearance when written.

By Pharma Company, a marketed drug has three names:

1. Chemical name- When a drug is first discovered, it is given a chemical name, which describes the atomic or molecular structure of the drug. The chemical name is too complex and difficult for general use. Example: Tramadol Hydrochloride

·    2. Generic name -Drug’s official name is the generic name. Generic names are more complicated and harder to remember than brand names. Health care professionals commonly use the generic name.

·   3. A brand name - The brand name is developed by the company on requesting approval for the drug and identifies it as the particular property of that company. Example: VENIDOL-P

Government guidelines on pharma drug (generic name and brand name)

  • As per government guidelines, Pharma companies must print generic names of the drug larger than the brand name. For example Brand name: Amaryl and Generic name: glimepiride
  • Also, pharmaceutical companies must print generic names of drugs in a font that is two font size larger than the brand name.
  • Another important point is, the change in font size is mandatory for all formulations, except combinations of vitamins and fixed-dose combinations consisting of more than three molecules.
  • Text of brand and generic must be in Myriad Pro/Calibri/Arial; also, it should be in the Upper Lower case.
  • Font for generic and brand name should be the same
  • Existing color schemes and carton design should remain the same, no changes should be made.
  • Underline, Italic for fonts of Generic name /Brand name should not be used.

Having 3 or more ingredients in Pharma products

  • As per drug formulation products which have 3 or more ingredients, their brand name should be in round brackets
  • As per guidelines, the complete red box should be for schedule H, H1
  • Storage conditions in bold

Some products have an only generic name

  • Use the complete red box for schedule H, H1
  • Text of generic name to be in Upper Lower case
